It was sheer co-incidence, a simple piece of Good Luck, that I happened to find this low-budget accomodation from Prague.

As a matter of fact, it was due thanks to jogging.

I had been staying for a few years in a hotel on the same street during my regular Prague -visits.

In November 2007, after a few days sitting in trains across Europe, I decided to do a little running on the nearby hills, in the park with a magnificent view over Prague.

When returning from jogging, I noticed David standing by the door of Pension Blanik. We spontaneously started to chat.

A Miracle of Miracles: The fellow spoke Finnish!

David has lived and studied in Joensuu. His Finnish is fluent, but - as a modest man - does not himself think his Finnish is so good.

Naturally, during the next visit to Prague, I stayed at the Blanik for the night. Actually, two nights.

The building itself is very typical of the houses in that part of Prague. The hotels of the neigbouring blocks operate in similar houses. But the Blanik is a pension.

So the price-level is much lower that that of the nearby hotels: affordable. Ideal for the budget -traveller.

The room was cozy, spacious. As a matter of fact, many times larger than for example the hotel rooms of, say, the two star hotels in Paris. Breakfast is not served, but this is not a problem. It is possible to buy a buffet-breakfast from any of the neighbouring small hotels.

There's an internet cafe on the same street, a couple of hundred meters up the hill.

You find a good selection of bars and restaurants from the vicinity. The price level is much lower than in downtown Prague. Here, you don't pay the "Stupid Tourist Extras" as in Central Prague!

My own favourite is the traditional corner restaurant just next to the internet cafe. A little bit worn-out, but in a nice, homely way. Filling and inexpensive "home-made" food. For example, their roasted trout with rice together with a bottle of cold, sparkling mineral water is an excellent choice on a hot summer evening. The fish is fresh and tasty, just like one would find on a fishing trip in the Finnish Lapland!

And you find all this only one or two (depends on which stop you get out) tram stops away from Prague's Central Railway Station, the Hlavní Nádraží.

But certainly, the traveller is allowed freely to choose his or her lodging from downtown Prague. If one really wants to pay - in the worst cases -manyfold extra for the prices of accomodation and restaurant services.

It's a free choice!
